"The Girl With Kaleidoscope Eyes" 16"x 14"x 11", fired clay with stains and 24K gold
Created for a group show based on John Lennon's lyrics, the text on "The Girl With Kaleidoscope Eyes" begins with words from the Beatles' song, "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" - "Picture yourself in a boat on a river...somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly - a girl with kaleidoscope eyes."
I was inspired by the idea of 'a girl with kaleidoscope eyes' representing our inner muse - how we might metaphorically look into her eyes and be enticed into taking a creative journey with her. I envisioned the kaleidoscope nature of her eyes not being about the color, but about the amazing experience of looking into another’s eyes and seeing entire new worlds there.
The muse gazes skywards, representing the moment of inspiration, wherein the first golden spark of an idea fans to flame as we see in our mind’s eye what is to become through our hands - the experience much like a 'mind flight' through a sky filled with diamonds. Then, like Alice’s Cheshire Cat, the muse herself begins to fade, disappearing into the shadows, leaving only the brilliance of the visions for us to bring to life. The remaining glow of her golden hands is enhanced and heightened by her blackened form, a reminder that the colors share a similar beginning - root words for 'black' include gleam, shine, bright, glittering and blaze.
The pattern of words flow leisurely around the figure as the path of a river, akin to the many twists and turns in life. The golden boat in her hands is the ethereal vessel in which we will embark on the journey. Fans of this song will notice that the words of the song are incomplete - a quiet nod to Lennon's 'life song' being cut short and to our own transient existence. This sculpture was inspired by "Call of the Muse" in the EPIC Series.
