Overcome
"Overcome," 16"x 44"x 24", fired clay
Private collection: Santa Fe, NM USA
This sculpture offers a physical metaphor of an experience most are familiar with, but whether the figure is being overcome or is overcoming is up to the viewer. The pattern of the words represents how our circumstances, experiences, thoughts, choices and words might hobble us for a time, but ultimately offers hope in that we are always able to get back up again. The text is a collection from people all over the world. I asked people online to respond to what the sculpture made them feel or think and includes contributions in English, French, Swedish, Finnish and Spanish, among others. For example, “Quanto mais fundo caio, mais forte me levanto - The deeper I fall, the stronger I rise.” (Rafael Mifano)
