Psithyros: Whisper of the Muse
Psithyros: Whisper of the Muse, 27”x 17”x 12,” Fired clay, MUSE Series
Private Collection: Las Cruces, NM
“Psithyros” is "whisper" in Greek. She is the muse who often speaks to us when our mind is quiet - when we’re daydreaming, taking a walk or thinking of something else other than our creativity. We “hear” the faintest whisper of an idea which then blooms into our next creation.
I sculpted Psithyros during my first artist residency. I received a "Kiln God Award" for a two week residency with other figurative ceramic sculptors at Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts in Newcastle, Maine. Each day I walked from the residence areas to the clay studio through beautiful fields filled with wildflowers, dancing butterflies and singing bees. These visuals inspired the relief designs covering Psithyros.
The relief motif on her body contains elements representing this blossoming - flowers, leaves, vines, butterflies exuberantly bursting into life with the ebullience of springtime.
